[Previous entry: "CLOSE KIN by Clare B. Dunkle -- Pieces Better than Whole (Preeti)"] [Main Index] [Next entry: "Edith's Not-So-Recent Reads -- Shinn, Caine, Dunkle, etc."] 12/01/2004 Entry: "Poll: What is on your holiday wish list?" Thanks to imprints like Firebird and the smarts of other publishers, we've lately been gifted by reissues of books like SORCERY AND CECELIA, WAR FOR THE OAKS, and Patricia Briggs's books. Also authors have resurfaced with some long-lost stories like THE GRAND TOUR, new "Black Jewels" stories from Anne Bishop, and the upcoming METALLIC LOVE. But we're greedy and want more! Which of the following would be on top of your holiday wish list? (If we get enough comments of other choices people wanted, we'll run another poll.) Replies: 22 Comments A wonderful book by a Canadian author named Ruth Nichols called Song of the Pearl. My copy is battered and has been xeroxed by my friends. See comments on Amazon.com by other people who have read and loved it. It begins with the death of the heroine and goes on from there, Posted by Susan Neace @ 12/01/2004 10:21 AM ET too tough to choose between bujold and mckinley....so different, but always such high quality from each of them! Posted by mary anne @ 12/01/2004 02:22 PM ET Loved this poll. I had a hard time deciding between Doris Egan and the Nightseer sequel. I voted for the Nightseer sequel. Posted by Phyllis @ 12/01/2004 02:51 PM ET Bujold was tempting... but a sequel to 'Sunshine' (Robin Mckinley) would have to trump it! Posted by Stuart Pegg @ 12/01/2004 03:00 PM ET Sequel to "Sunshine" by McKinley, though I guess we should be submitting that request to The Story Council (see her website). Posted by Heidi @ 12/01/2004 04:37 PM ET I voted for another Damar book from McKinley but I would love a sequel to Sunshine even more. I’d also like the third Tamir book by Lynn Flewelling to be published some time this decade. Posted by Dana @ 12/01/2004 07:44 PM ET I voted for a Damar story from McKinley, but I'd sure love another book from Delia Marshall Turner. Anyone know why she's not writing anymore? Posted by Jill @ 12/01/2004 07:55 PM ET I almost voted for Bujold, but ended up going with the Nightseer sequel. I loved relationship between Nightseer and the dark elf who became her consort. Posted by Katherine @ 12/01/2004 11:02 PM ET While a sequel to McKinley's Sunshine would be terrific, I've always wanted a sequel to Vivian Vande Velde's The Conjurer Princess... I know there's gotta be more to their story! Posted by SK @ 12/02/2004 01:44 AM ET Hands down item on my list has got to be Bujold and Ivan's Story. No question. Posted by sky @ 12/02/2004 11:28 AM ET Most people don't realize that Ann Maxwell is a great sci-fi writer. Her Fire Dancer series has only 3 books and she is not writing any more, alas I wish there was more. Posted by Susan @ 12/02/2004 01:56 PM ET A sequel to City of Diamond would be very nice, but not my top wish. A Feast for Crows would be my fave, or missing that, the new book by Annette Curtis Klause or a new one by Megan Whalen Turner. Posted by T @ 12/02/2004 08:01 PM ET Ru Emerson did some wonderful non-Xena books that I would love to see republished and also see additional ones added. The Nightthreads series, Princess of the Flames and the Nedeo series were great. Posted by Susan Neace @ 12/02/2004 08:01 PM ET OOOh, definitely a reprint of _Mirabile_ by Janet Kagan. Short stories about 'mama Jason' and friends, originally printed in IASFM. Humor, fun characters, some romance, some suspense, in a world with somewhat unstable genetics (roughly, a byproduct of the terraforming-database storage method) I don't have a copy, and I *want* one! Posted by meg d @ 12/03/2004 11:46 AM ET I agree with T. I want more Megan Whalen Turner. Whatever happened to her?? Posted by lavender @ 12/04/2004 10:13 AM ET Good point on not seeng a new Megan Whalen Turner book in a while, but the most ludicrous situation has to be the non-publication of the tenth book in L.J. Smith's 10-book Night World series. Posted by Preeti @ 12/04/2004 03:04 PM ET Ultimate item for my holiday wish list (one that is not likely to be satisfied any time soon, or perhaps ever): The third and last book of the Exiles trilogy, by Melanie Rawn. I've been waiting 7 years for this book. Posted by Samantha @ 12/05/2004 02:04 AM ET Often on multiple choice tests there are options like "all of the above," or "A and C;" if the poll were set up to allow that, I'd vote A (LMBujold), C (McKinley/Damar) and H (Anne Logston). I'd also second several of the other suggestions (A Feast for Crows, Exiles #3-The Captal's Tower, Mirabile/Hellspark/Uhura's Song reprints), and add (as one might guess from my email address), the fourth and final book in Diane Duane's "Tale of the Five." Posted by Jaru @ 12/05/2004 07:57 AM ET I'd dearly love a sequel to Barbara Hambly's Windrose Chronicles. I'd also second the wish for Diane Duane's 'A Door Into Starlight', with the codicil that I'd rather wait for it than have it published before D.D is happy with it. That's one that really has to be 'perfect' to work, considering that anyone who's read 'High Wizardry' has a pretty good idea how Starlight will end. Posted by Eris @ 12/05/2004 11:49 AM ET Another new Sunshine book by Robin McKinley or another new Tinker book by Wen Spencer Posted by Julie @ 12/05/2004 09:37 PM ET I wanted the rest of the twelve treasures series by Rosemary Edghill, a Nightseer sequel and some more Damar books by Robin McKinley. I love two of those authors dearly, although I'm rather vexed at one of them for the way she's changing her writing style from good to "no real plot lines and only meaningless and emotionless sex." I also really enjoyed the Edghill books, although those are really the only ones of hers I've read. What I'd like to see on here would be some more James Clemens books and more of Patricia C. Wrede's Enchanted Forsest stories and books. Posted by Sarah @ 12/06/2004 02:41 PM ET No contest, the third Damar book wins for me. Susan - so neat to discover another Ruth Nichols' fan! Her "World" books (A Walk Out of and The Marrow of) are two of my favourite YA fantasies ever. I have a treasured HB copy of AWOTW with the Schart-Hyman illustrations but am still searching for a matching edition of TMOTW. Maybe if I'm really good Santa will come through...
