Here's another vampire books for you vampire lovers.

DHAMPIR- Barb & J.C. Hendee

Magiere and her half-elf partner, Leesil have made a reputation as
vampire hunters but in truth have been running a scam for years. Magiere is
now ready to retire from it and start a new business with a newly acquired
bar. But everything starts to change when she is attacked by a creature
that calls her hunter and is almost impossible to stop. His death brings on
the vengeance of the real vampires.
I highly recommend this book. It has lots of action, intriguing
characters and a plot that keeps you guessing. It was fascinating as you
learn about the backgrounds of the main characters. They've managed to work
together for years and guard each others right to privacy so much, they
don't even know each other's past. But the attack changes everything.
Leesil finds himself having to use skills from his past and Magiere actually
starts changing physically as she fights the vampires. There is a
mysterious character, Welstiel Massing that gives her hints of what is
happening to her.
I really enjoyed this book but had one quibble. You actually got to
know the vampires as much as the h/h and the 2 main ones were actually, what
I would call in any other book, good vampires. But circumstances (possibly
manipulated) seemed to be against them. Frankly I would have rather been
left in the dark but obviously there is something more going on that I won't
be able to find out til the next book.

So though the main plot of this
book and a lot of the mysteries involving Magiere's past are revealed, there
is much more to come. I'm looking forward to the next book a lot. There
wasn't any romance between the h/h but I live in hope. Grin

Frankly they
worked together and respected each others talents for years but didn't
really know each other. I'm hoping something develops as the series
continues.

I have Blood Memories in my tbr pile. Will have to move it up.

Dhampir is a great book. I don't usually go in much for vampire stories, but this one was exceptional. I completely disagree, that getting to know Rashed the other vampires took away from the story, nor do I think they were 'good' vampires. They certainly weren't maliciously evil or cruel, but they were what they were: deadly predators. In fact, one of the things I loved abour Dhampir was seeing the story from both points of view without moral judgements.

I'm not saying I don't understand your point; I truly liked the vamps and hated how everyone was manipulated into conflict, but I think that was the book's greatest strength (seeing how the vamps were 'people' too, yet still had to be stopped.)

On a related note, the sequel Thief of Lives just came out the other week. I haven't gotten it yet but I plan to. Also, if you like creative vampire stories, an author friend of the Hendees', EE Knight, just published a great (and very unique) vampire story titled Way of the Wolf. It's definitely worth the read and it's got a very touching romance towards the end. Really great book.

Charapa...I have to disagree with you on this one...I for one didnt enjoy it that much...I felt much of the vampire characterizartion was much to traditional...the whole may I come in thing for one...straight out of Bram Stokers story...plus I didnt feel the fantasy world it was set in was anything new...all in all I thought the book was o.k at best...I will not buy the new one...EE Knights book on the otherhand I felt was much better...I actually enjoyed that one......DONT TELL BARB OR J.C I DIDNT LIKE THE BOOK....I dont want to anger them.... Wink

Hi Charapa,

I flipped through this book when it came out. I was specifically looking for a romance and had to laugh at what I found: young vampire hunter meets virginal farmer's daughter, has a tumble in the hay with her (yes, literally), and immediately falls in love. This might be on my all time list of how not to write a compelling love story. (Maybe the author was deliberately writing this tongue in cheek.)

I will give credit to the rest of the book. It was oddly gripping. I meant to skim, but I actually got sucked in to the last third of the story. The farmer's daughter certainly became more interesting. Still, I don't think I'll be reading more. It's not my particular cup of tea--too scary--though Linda or Laurie may like it.

I must say that Dhampir is one of my all time favorite books- along with about 300 others. But seriously, the story may be an action adventure high fantasy but the characters (all of them) are highly detailed. It is that very subtle shading and highlighting of their personalities that I believe has made it a novel accepted by both men and women. The romance in Dhampir is very subtly developing between two people that have a lot to hide, from each other and everybody else.
By the end of the novel, the trials and tribulations they have endured has formed a solid bond between traveling companions. The second book Thief of Lives tempers that bond and tests it well before sharpening it to a fine edge of trust that finally cuts through the secrets holding them apart. The romance is not overt slap-you-in-the-face stuff. Rather it is the subtle shifting of emotions and volitile feelings into a full-fledged love. The third novel Sister of the Dead explores Magiere's past as the couple try to unravel their past from their present in an attempt to regain control of their destinies. not as much chance for romance, but their slow metamorphosis into a bonded couple despite the gruesome finds they discover about themselves is heartwarming to see. Leesil isn't fascinated by Magiere's dark side, he loves her inspite of it and is willing to do whatever is necessary to keep her standing in the light by his side. For her part she has found solid gold- his hair and eyes shine for her alone. The next book Traitor of the Blood will take them into Leesil's past where he can hopefully rescue his mom with Magiere's help.
